Divisional Playoffs Showdown Results

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

sword_140x140Showdowns are 4-player, 1-week round robin, winner-take-all format events. They are essentially a mini-tournament, and a great way to play a trio of games in a single week and show off your skills winning a group beyond individual matches. Showdown winners also receive the sword icon and 2.5 achievement points towards their Leaderboard ranking for the win.

Check out the Throwdown Showdown page for rules and links to past results. This was the last week of Showdowns for the 2014-15 NFL season.

NFL Playoffs Challenge Wild-Card Weekend (Round 1) Results

Monday, January 5th, 2015

Our NFL Playoffs Challenge is officially underway with the Wild-Card Weekend games kicking things off this past weekend to give us our opening round results in the challenge.

The NFL Playoffs Challenge is a competition where each contestant plays two Throwdown games per week of the NFL Playoffs (one game for Super Bowl), and we tally points for how well they performed in those challenges. Players earn 2 points for a win, plus 0.5 points if they win a challenge by 21 or more fantasy points. There is an also additional 0.5 points awarded after the Super Bowl, for each time they drafted the eventual Super Bowl MVP in all of their Throwdown games in this contest.

We have 20 entries in the contest, prizes for Top 5 overall finishers, plus a weekly prize. Read the original sign up post for full rules and details. Now without further adieu, here are the results from Wild-Card Weekend.

You vs. ___ ?

As everyone who played in the challenge quickly realized, once we picked the three games in the challenges, I was able to load picks for the Throwdown1 and Throwdown2 accounts which allowed our members to draft their entire team without needing to wait for an opponent to respond (or pretty close). Sort of like drafting against a computer player.

We did some of this during the Turkey Day Challenge, and I wanted to try it again here in the interest of keeping things moving, especially the first week with hectic schedules around New Year’s. At this point I need to come clean however and give credit where credit is due. These were not my own personal rankings.

The Throwdown1 account – games with O+ Flex (QB/RB/WR/TE) lineup – used rankings from 4for4.com and experts John Paulsen (@4for4_John) and Josh Moore (@4for4_Josh).

The Throwdown2 account – games with O Flex (RB/WR/TE) lineup – used rankings from Pro Football Focus, a blended ranking from three of their contributors, Jeff Ratcliffe (@JeffRatcliffe), Mike Clay (@MikeClayNFL) and Ross Miles (@RossMilesNFL).

These experts really lived up to their names with a solid performance, especially considering it was nothing more complicated than inputting their overall rankings in the database, with no consideration for strategy based on how our members were drafting. The T1 and T2 accounts also did not take advantage of the Block. It was only used as a last round pick if needed (if a member blocked T1 or T2 during the draft). Even with some A.J. Green mixed in before late in the week realizing he wasn’t going to play, their records were very good.

Throwdown1, a.k.a. 4for4, went 14-6. None of the 6 losses were by 21 or more points. Congrats John and Josh! (Even though they didn’t know this was happening.)

Throwdown2, a.k.a. PFF, went 11-9. Only 4 of the losses were by 21 or more points. These rankings were a little more Cincinnati Bengals top-heavy, including Green as their #6 overall player, which cost them a few wins. Very nice job considering, Jeff, Mike and Ross! (Also didn’t know about this in advance.)

Okay, that is who you played against. Lets get to the Wild-Card Weekend and overall standings through Round 1 of the NFL Playoffs Challenge.

Congrats mikemar, who wins the Round 1 weekly prize, just edging out Wilforkisland on the margin of victory!

We can see with only four players going 2-0 after one week, this is still very much anyone’s ball game, because there are still five games to be played. The Super Bowl game counts for double points.

Divisional Playoffs round games will be input soon. Make sure to check back the rules so you know the lineup requirements for each game. Will I pre-load rankings again this week? Likely, yes. Am I going to say whose rankings they are? No.

Good luck!

NFL Playoffs Challenge – Play Daily Fantasy Football for Super Bowl XLIX

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

The end of football season is near! No wait, lets be positive about this. The NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl are almost here, and our NFL Playoffs Challenge is back (last year)!

Sign up to play and receive specially marked Fantasy Throwdown challenges each week of the NFL Playoffs, including the Super Bowl, to be played against an independent Throwdown admin player.

Contestants earn points for wins, plus bonus points for margins of victory and for drafting the eventual Super Bowl MVP. Standings are tabulated after each week of the playoffs, and the overall winners are declared after the conclusion of Super Bowl XLIX.

It is $20 per entry, and we are capping the contest at only 20 entries, so don’t miss your chance to join! Read below for full rules and details.

Format and Rules

  1. Sign up by purchasing an entry in the NFL Playoffs Challenge. One entry is $20, and members can purchase multiple entries.
  2. Once the playoff schedule is known after the conclusion of Week 17, each contestant receives two official Fantasy Throwdown challenges marked “PC” (Playoffs Challenge) for Wild-Card Weekend.
  3. Contestants need to accept the challenges and finish their drafts against a representative from Fantasy Throwdown the week leading up to the Wild-Card Weekend games.
  4. Once results are in after the last game on Sunday, points are awarded for wins, and standings are tabulated for the Playoffs Challenge.
  5. Contestants earn 2 points for a win, plus a half point bonus if they win by 21 or more points. There is potential for an additional half point bonus awarded for drafting the eventual Super Bowl MVP.
  6. All contestants each receive another two Fantasy Throwdown challenges for Divisional Playoffs, and two for Conference Championships. Points are awarded and standings updated each week.
  7. All contestants each receive one Fantasy Throwdown challenge for Super Bowl. All available points are doubled for Super Bowl (4 points for a win, 1 point for a win by 21+, 1 point for drafting the Super Bowl MVP).
  8. Final overall standings after the conclusion of the Super Bowl determine our overall contest winners. There is also a weekly prize for the best single week performance (all games played for one entry) after each round of the first three weeks of the playoffs (no weekly prize for the Super Bowl).

Important Points

Contest Entry Deadline

Wild-Card Weekend games start Saturday January 3rd. The deadline to join the NFL Playoffs Challenge is Friday January 2nd at 12:00pm Eastern, to help ensure drafts are finished prior to opening kickoff of the first playoff game.

Incomplete Drafts

If a contestant fails to accept and sufficiently complete their draft (at least 7 picks made) prior to Friday at 6:00pm Eastern of that week’s games, then Fantasy Throwdown cannot guarantee the draft will be finished before opening kickoff of that playoff week. An incomplete draft will expire, and no points awarded to the contestant for that match.

Standings Tie-breakers

In the event contestants are tied in the standings based on points earned, the first tie-breaker is overall point differential. The second tie-breaker is point differential for the Super Bowl.

Multiple Entries

Contestants can purchase multiple entries. These will be marked PC1 (first entry), PC2, (second entry), PC3 (third), etc., etc. Contestants cannot combine PC1 results from one week with PC2 results from another week, for example. Each entry must be tracked separately.

This is our last Fantasy Throwdown event of the season, and perhaps your only chance to play fantasy football for the Super Bowl! Sign up today so you don’t miss out. Good luck!

Playoffs Tourney Divisional Results

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Many people claimed this past weekend was going to be the best weekend of football all year, and the way the games turned out, their claim could very well be on the money. We started Saturday with a double overtime thriller in which I sure expected the Denver Broncos defense to play much better, and perhaps Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco to play a little worse, than each did. Of course for fantasy the Denver D/ST was a great pick, thanks to former Houston Texan Trindon Holliday. Anyone watching last night’s game with a rumbling Danieal Manning think how a swifter Holliday would have made a difference in that game? Or another former Texan, Jacoby Jones for that matter.

On to the Saturday night game, Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick, your dynasty league fantasy stock just went through the roof. The Packers had no answer for Kaepernick short of that early interception returned for a touchdown. At the end of this one we had back-to-back scoring fests and were possibly setting Fantasy Throwdown records for weekly high score. That is, if anyone picked the likes of Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree and Torrey Smith for their teams.

On Sunday the first half was all Atlanta Falcons, but for us diehards whose eyes didn’t flip away in the second half, we got to witness Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson just tear up the Falcons defense while the Falcons offense did little to compensate. So it was all Seahawks except for a short trip down memory lane courtesy of Michael Turner, and the ‘Hawks took the lead finally with :31 on the clock. Only to blow it. Two pass plays and two field goal attempts later, the second of which counted, the Falcons advance. I feel bad for Wilson, but very good for Tony Gonzalez. Well earned and a long time coming, best TE of all time.

Finally for the match expected to be the most lopsided, the Texans hung around with the New England Patriots for a while, but it became apparent the teams are playing on different levels right now. Even with some key injuries to Rob Gronkowski (costing many a Throwdown win this week, I’m sure) and Danny Woodhead, the Pats depth easily picked up the slack. I’m not saying this would have made the difference last night, but the Texans losing MLB Brian Cushing midseason was significant.

As for our NFL Playoffs Tournament, Round 2 results are in with the group standings shown below. Nice job everyone getting all of the drafts done last week, and congrats to our group winners! We will shake up the groups again for Round 3, the Conference Championships. The new group assignments will be in the next Site News post, but in the meantime if you want to get started drafting with the smaller player pool (just two games on the NFL schedule), go ahead and start issuing some challenges. Good luck!

Playoffs Tourney Divisional Group Assignments

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Wild-Card Weekend results are in, now it is time for the Divisional Round! As I’m sure all of you know, the NFL games on the schedule are:

Saturday January 12

  • Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos, 4:30 Eastern
  • Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers, 8:00

Sunday January 13

  • Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons, 1:00
  • Houston Texans at New England Patriots, 4:30

With four games on the schedule, we still have the “pick three NFL games” rule in place with a normal size player pool for all of our Fantasy Throwdown matches. Starting the following week, for the Conference Finals, the player pool gets smaller with only two games on the schedule.

The results for all of our groups from the Wild-Card Round were mixed up to form our current NFL Playoffs Tournament overall standings, which also forms the groups for this round. Players ranked overall 1 through 5 are Group A for the Divisional Round, players ranked 6 through 10 are Group B, 11 through 15 are Group C, and so on and so forth.

As mentioned in our last post with the Wild-Card results, even if you aren’t high on the overall rankings right now, does not mean you can’t fight your way back to the top. Here are the overall standings after Round 1 and group assignments for Round 2:

Playoffs Tourney Wild-Card Results

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Wild-Card Weekend is in the books and Round 1 of our NFL Playoffs Tournament is also finished, so it time to post the results of our six, five-player groups so we can take the next step towards the Divisional Playoff round.

Each group played a round robin of four games, and if you went all-in on certain players this past weekend it either helped immensely (Arian Foster, Marshawn Lynch) or hurt considerably (RG3, Andre Johnson) your chances to win your matches. I was high on Aaron Rodgers to duplicate at home what he did the prior week against the Vikings in Minnesota. Unfortunately his 274-1 line was a far cry from 365-4. I think I was lucky to finish middle of the road at 2-2.

Remember, no matter how you finished in your group, everyone plays on in this tournament all the way through the Super Bowl. All of the groups will be mixed up, so if you are at the lower end of the standings at this point, you just need to fight back next round and climb the ladder towards the top groups. Of course the guys already at or near the top will be doing their darnedest to stay where they are or move up themselves. This post is for the Wild-Card group standings. The next post will include the new group assignments.
