jeffNFL Wins Throwdown League Championship

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

trophy_105x105A league is usually an 8-player, 8-week event, with players playing a 7-week double header regular season. The top two teams after the regular season compete in the eighth week in a triple header championship. A league gives some flexibility to have a little fun with the format, implementing neat twists and turns from regular Throwdown matches over the course of the regular season. Some examples include, “bench only challenges”, or “#RaceToTheBottom” (must pick all uninjured starters, but lowest points wins).

The payout for this $10 entry fee league is $50 for 1st place and $22 for 2nd place. Each player who placed in these spots also receives the trophy icon and achievement bonus points of 10 and 5 respectively, towards their Leaderboard ranking.

Throwdown League #1

Best-of-Three Championship
#1 jeffNFL vs. #2 Wilforkisland

The best-of-three Championship was played in Week 10, and the winner is . . . by split decision . . . okay, I already gave it away in the title . . .

jeffNFL

Congrats Jeff!

Clearly these were three tough matches, as it was decided two games to one, and there wasn’t a big discrepancy in any of the scores. In fact two of the three games were decided by less than 4 points each! The third and deciding game, Jeff pulled away from Wilfork by a little over 18 points.

Wilforkisland 142.65
jeffNFL 145.85

Wilforkisland 120.35
jeffNFL 116.4

jeffNFL 155.1
Wilforkisland 136.9

Jeff wins $50, the trophy icon and 10 achievement points towards his Leaderboard ranking. Wilforkisland wins $22, the trophy icon and 5 achievement points. We don’t plan to start any more leagues this season, so these two will be the only two members with the trophy icon this year, which is pretty cool distinction.

Thanks again everyone for playing in the 2014 Throwdown League.

Week 9 Throwdown League Results

We currently have only one official Throwdown League running, but that should change once sign ups and results become more automated. Then people can even start and run their own league, which would be pretty cool, but we’re not there yet.

This league started in Week 3, so Week 9 was the final week of the 7-week regular season. With only a week before the Championship Week, to be played Week 10, players played straight up games with no special conditions.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the top two teams based on head-to-head record advance to a three-game championship. Congrats to jeffNFL and Wilforkisland for finishing 1st and 2nd, respectively, with identical 10-4 won-loss records. They split their season series 1-1, so it came down to points differential, just a 6.55 margin, to give Jeff the number one seed.

Wk 9 – TL1 – 10 W L PF   PA   Dif
1. jeffNFL 10 4 1,414.4 1,260.9 153.6

8. rhazes_darkk 4 10 1,270.5 1,340.4 -69.9

There wasn’t much suspense going into the final week as something really drastic needed to happen for one of jeffNFL or Wilforkisland to fall out of the top two spots. They did flip between each other again however, for about the third of fourth straight week, with Jeff just edging out Wilfork for top spot as mentioned above.

There was a great fight for third place, as Bigchief37, TheKommish and Luxuriousdusti each finished with 7-7 records. Sifting through the prior results, Bigchief went 3-1 in games vs. TheKommish and Luxuriousdusti, while TheKommish went 2-2 and Luxuriousdusti, 1-3. So, head-to-head record gave us the above order for 3rd through 5th place, even though points differential happened to be in the exact same order.

There were a lot of splits this week. Only Luxuriousdusti went 2-0 while TheKommish went 0-2 in his games. That means there wasn’t a lot of movement from last week. Closing out the final regular season standings, mikemar finished 6th, tttimmyg 7th and rhazes_darkk 8th.

Week 8 Throwdown League Results

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

trophy_105x105A league is usually an 8-player, 8-week event, with players playing a 7-week double header regular season.

Each player who placed in these spots also receives the trophy icon and achievement bonus points of 10 and 5 respectively, towards their Leaderboard ranking.

This one started in Week 3, so there are only one weeks to go in the 7-week regular season after the conclusion of Week 8. The game format this week is #RaceToTheBottom. That means, LOWEST score wins. Our players had to pick starters, and suffer a penalty if they pick a player who is declared inactive, so they are drafting players who were playing but not expected to perform very much for fantasy.

Complicating things, I neglected to change the lineup requirement from the prior week, which was dual-flex. I didn’t realize until late in the week when one of our league members mentioned adding a third TE to their roster. Sorry about that! But, everyone was on equal footing, and with more roster spots than intended, it made #RaceToTheBottom even more challenging.

Throwdown League #1 (reg. season week 6)

Wk 8 – TL1 – 10 W L PF   PA   Dif
1. Wilforkisland 9 3 1,124.4 979.8 144.7
2. jeffNFL 9 3 1,133.8 997.9 135.9
3. TheKommish 7 5 1,202.1 1,204.4 -2.4

8. rhazes_darkk 3 9 1,002.1 1,084.4 -82.3

It flipped again. Wilforkisland is back in 1st place ahead of jeffNFL, but by the slimmest of margins. They played each other this week, and Wilfork won, resulting in them splitting their season series. Jeff won the first head-to-head match back in NFL Week 4. From there, we go to the points differential, and Wilfork holds the slight 10 point advantage. FYI, points for this week went in your points against category, and points against when in your points for category, since the game format was lowest points scored.

Anyway, with these two both at 9-3, and the next closest team, TheKommish at 7-5, they may have already punched their ticket to the championship final next week. The only thing that could happen is one of our top two go 0-2 this week, while TheKommish goes 2-0, and Kommish holds a head-to-head tie-breaker over the player he ties with. Improbable, but not impossible.

Bigchief37, who got off to a fast start in the league, dropped both games this week bringing his record to 6-6, out of championship contention. Everyone split their games this week except Wilfork and Bigchief. mikemar and Luxuriousdusti are 5-7, while tttimmyg and rhazes_darkk round out the league standings.

Note, the standings, for simplicity are sorted by record and then points differential, but head-to-head is still the first tie-breaker if needed to decide playoff spots at the end of the season. Each player should play every other player twice over the course of the season.

This one started in Week 3, so there are only two weeks to go in the 7-week regular season after the conclusion of Week 7. The games this week used a dual-flex lineup, and QB is included in the flex. There were some real dog QB performances this week, so some of our players might have been attracted to using a QB in the flex spot, but ultimately to their own detriment.

TheKommish won his pair of games, Luxuriousdusti went 0-2, and everyone else split. We’ve got quite the battle brewing for those top two playoff spots amongst our top four teams.

Note, the standings, for simplicity are sorted by record and then points differential, but head-to-head is still the first tie-breaker if needed to decide playoff spots at the end of the season. Each player should play every other player twice over the course of the season.

Week 6 Throwdown League Results

Each player who placed in these spots also receives the trophy icon and achievement bonus points of 10 and 5 respectively, towards their Leaderboard ranking.

This one started in Week 3, so we are past the halfway mark of the 7-week regular season after the conclusion of Week 6. The games this week restricted our players to using three of only four NFL games on the schedule. Those games were Jaguars-Titans, Lions-Vikings, Chargers-Raiders and 49ers-Rams.

Why these games? They were calculated as the lowest combined points scored of all NFL games on the Week 6 schedule, so our players have to dig deep to find some fantasy success from these NFL rosters. As expected, it resulted in some close matches, included a 1.4 point win by tttimmyg over jeffNFL and a 2.3 point win by Wilforkisland over rhazes_darkk.

Wilforkisland won both of his matches to jump to 7-1 and sit all alone in first place through four weeks. The only other 2-0 week goes to tttimmyg, giving him his first two wins of the season and pulling him out of the basement.

There were four players who split their games this week, but still some separation in the standings based on head-to-head record when all was said and done. jeffNFL holds 2nd place with a 6-2 record. BigChief37 is a game behind in 3rd at 5-3, while TheKommish and Luxuriousdusti are in 4th and 5th with an even 4-4 record.

Week 5 Throwdown League Results

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

trophy_105x105We currently have only one official Throwdown League running, but that should change once sign ups and results become more automated. Then people can even start and run their own league, which would be pretty cool, but we’re not there yet.

This one started in Week 3, so Week 5 was the third week of its regular season. This week our league members played straight up – no funny business like the all-bench challenges in Week 4 – but we did add QB-Flex to the lineups.

A league is usually an 8-player, 8-week event, with players playing a 7-week double header regular season. The top two teams after the regular season compete in the eighth week in a triple header championship. A league gives some flexibility to have a little fun with the format, implementing neat twists and turns from regular Throwdown matches over the course of the regular season. A huge shakeup this week in the standings! jeffNFL and Wilforkisland each won their pair of games, while Bigchief37 dropped both to fall out of 1st place and into 3rd.

TheKommish also fell on hard times. He was 3-1 heading into the week but dropped both of his games. mikemar won both of his (impressive, considering he probably went TE for his Flex instead of QB). Now there is a complete logjam in the middle with three, 3-3 teams.

rhazes_darkk got off the schneid with his first win, while tttimmyg continues to scuffle in this league. On the bright side, he lost the two closest matches of the week, by 8.25 to mikemar and 11.4 to Luxuriousdusti. Second thought, he probably preferred I didn’t bring that up…

Note guys, the standings, for simplicity are sorted by record and then points differential, but head-to-head is still the first tie-breaker if needed to decide playoff spots at the end of the season. Each player should play every other player twice over the course of the season.

Week 4 Throwdown League Results

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

trophy_105x105We currently have only one official Throwdown League running, although I suspect there are a couple of the unofficial variety on the go. This one started in Week 3, so Week 4 was the second week of its regular season. This league really needs a proper name, doesn’t it? League members, feel free to post suggestions.

The twist with the games this week – a Throwdown favorite – all-bench challenges! Using the start/bench filter our drafters could only select bench players, except defense. Charlie Whitehurst slipped through the cracks as the only QB who was marked as bench early in the week. Some difference makers included Devin Hester, Eddie Royal, Stevie Johnson, Brandon LaFell, and there sure wasn’t much to get excited about at running back.

Bigchief37 holds down top spot after back-to-back 2-0 weeks. Wilforkisland was tied for first but falls back into a three-way tie for second after he split his week.

JeffNFL won his pair of games thanks to the aforementioned Eddie Royal. TheKommish won his doubleheader by the narrowest of margins of 1.1 and 0.3 points, which explains his 3-1 record but odd looking -20 points differential.

Note guys, the standings, for simplicity are sorted by record and then points differential, but head-to-head is still the first tie-breaker if needed to decide playoff spots at the end of the season. Each player should play every other player twice over the course of the season.

Week 3 Throwdown League Results

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

trophy_105x105Last but certainly not least, we started a new Throwdown League in Week 3 and need to post the results from the opening week. A league is usually an 8-player, 8-week event, with players playing a 7-week double header regular season. The top two teams after the regular season compete in the eighth week in a triple header championship.

Although the opening week was fairly standard, a league gives some flexibility to have a little fun with the format, implementing neat twists and turns from regular Throwdown matches over the course of the regular season.
